Baptism is a clear way of showing that we belong to Jesus and want to follow Him. When someone is baptized, they announce their faith commitment to Jesus Christ by being briefly ‘dunked’ underwater in public. It is a powerful picture of total commitment to Jesus.
It is important to understand that baptism is not a step of spiritual ‘graduation’ that we take when we feel good enough. It is meant to be one of the first steps in the Christian life. Baptism does not make a person a Christian but is a symbol or picture of what has already happened to someone who is a Christian – a visual aid to help us understand and remember what is involved in salvation.
