“Repent and be baptized, every one of you …” – Acts 2:38-39
Baptism is a clear way of showing that we now belong to Jesus and want to follow Him. When someone is baptized, they announce their faith commitment to Jesus Christ by being briefly ‘dunked’ underwater in public. It is a powerful picture of total commitment to Jesus.
Baptism is a picture of FORGIVENESS: A physical washing symbolic of the washing away of our sins that happens inwardly to those who believe in Jesus.
Baptism is a picture of CONVERSION: An illustration of death and burial that visualizes the end of the old life and the beginning of a new life.
It is important to realize that baptism is not a step of spiritual ‘graduation’ that we take when we feel good enough. It is meant to be one of the first steps in the Christian life. Baptism does NOT make a person a Christian but is a symbol or picture of what has already happened to someone who is a Christian – a visual aid to help us understand and remember what is involved in salvation.
